Message from the Festival Director (Shankar Gaha Magar)
“Literature is not merely a collection of words.”
It is a mirror of society, a means of preserving culture, and a carrier of human consciousness. It plays a profound role in the creative transformation of individuals, communities, and nations. Literature also helps us understand the history, culture, and diverse dimensions of human life. It strengthens people’s ability to think and analyze, raises awareness against social evils, superstition, and discrimination, and encourages social awakening.
Literature gives voice and language to the complex emotions of a society—its happiness, pain, love, resistance, and hope. Literary ideas provide intellectual energy and inspiration for great revolutions and social transformations. Literature teaches people to step beyond their own boundaries and see the world from the perspectives of others.
It is in this spirit that the Magar Literary Festival is being organized.
There are more than five thousand Indigenous peoples and communities around the world, and the Magar community is one of the ancient and prominent Indigenous communities of Nepal. On the global stage, Magars are primarily recognized for their association with the Gurkha tradition, rich cultural heritage, honesty, hard work, and peaceful nature. However, the Magar community has played an important role not only in building Nepal but also in shaping the wider world.
Unfortunately, due to the lack of sufficient written documentation, much of the glorious history of the Magar community remains obscured. This festival is therefore being organized to uncover and bring to light those hidden chapters of history.
Literature serves as an invisible yet powerful catalyst for connecting, awakening, and transforming communities. It exposes social problems such as superstition, caste-based discrimination, and gender inequality, while creating awareness and encouraging collective action for change. By bringing the stories and struggles of marginalized and overlooked communities into the mainstream, literature gives them the courage to speak for their rights and dignity.
Literature also plays a vital role in documenting local languages, oral traditions, folk stories, songs, and cultural practices by transforming them into literary expressions. The experiences, struggles, achievements, and stories of ancestors are passed on to new generations through literature.
Poetry, drama, essays, and intellectual discussions create an environment for meaningful debate and critical thinking within a community. In essence, literature does not merely provide a community with language and stories. It teaches communities to recognize their problems, stand for justice, develop a shared understanding, and move toward collective prosperity.
Therefore, for the creation of a civilized, conscious, creative, and culturally vibrant society, a literary movement is not merely desirable—it is essential.
